Homework at Flagstone State School
At Flagstone State School we believe that homework provides students with opportunities to consolidate their classroom learning and involve family members in their learning. The setting of homework considers the need for students to have a balanced lifestyle. This includes sufficient time for family, recreation, community and cultural pursuits. Homework is effective in supporting learning when it has a clear purpose.
In 2026, homework is provided online by the classroom teacher as a trial. Parents will have an opportunity to participate in another homework consultation period at the end of 2026.
The purpose of homework is to engage students in independent learning to complement work undertaken in class. Homework is most effective when it:
- Consolidates, revises and/or applies student's classroom learning.
- Appropriate to particular years of schooling.
- Varied and differentiated to individual learning needs.

Literacy
We understand how important it is for parents to be aware of what's happening in the classroom when it comes to reading and spelling. That's why, for schools using Sound Waves Literacy resources, Firefly put together an informative video for parents.
It's important to note that current best practices for teaching reading and spelling may be new to many parents. Home reading should be used as an opportunity to work on fluency and revise previously taught phoneme–grapheme relationships and Special Words.
When using the Decodable Readers for home reading, you may access the eReaders library. We recommend students read Decodable Readers that feature already taught phoneme–grapheme relationships (i.e. from units covered in previous weeks). This helps the focus of home reading to be on fluency where students can read the books accurately without prompting.
How do decodable readers and children's literature support reading comprehension?
Word recognition and language comprehension are both vital for successful reading comprehension and neither alone is sufficient. So how do we use decodable readers and literary texts to teach and foster these abilities?
Decodable readers are designed to be read by students. As a resource, they strengthen rapid and accurate word recognition, provide opportunities to practise and improve reading fluency, and contribute significantly to language comprehension.
Sound Waves Decodable Readers are available for Foundation and Year 1. We have also made the library available to students in Year 2 to access for consolidation and fluency. Each Decodable Reader has been meticulously written using tightly controlled parameters that adhere to Sound Waves Literacy's systematic synthetic phonics sequence. The books are available in three levels of difficulty: Support, Core or Extended. Well-written and illustrated Decodable Readers like the Sound Waves Decodable Readers can also develop vocabulary and background knowledge, but this is not their main purpose.
In conjunction with decodable readers, literary texts, that are read to students, are a rich and essential resource in developing language comprehension. Listening to stories enables students to expand their vocabulary and background knowledge while they become familiar with different text types. Reading children's literature aloud also allows you to model correct reading behaviours, such as phrasing and pace.
As learning to read is an extremely complex process, all educators need an understanding of the skills that underpin reading. A conceptual framework such as the Simple View of Reading, or Scarborough's Reading Rope6, helps teachers understand the reading process, how they can teach their students to read and how to identify where students might experience difficulty.
